A week from today, William R. Calnon, D.D.S., will begin serving as Acting Director of Eastman Institute of Oral Health and Acting Chair of the Department of Dentistry.
In this temporary capacity, he replaces Cyril Meyerowitz, D.D.S., M.S., who is stepping down as announced in 2010.
Dr. Bill Calnon is the current chair of the Eastman Dental Center Foundation Board, president of the American Dental Association, and a private practitioner in Chili. He will soon be named part-time professor of Dentistry at the School of Medicine and Dentistry to enable him to serve in this interim role.
Dr. Calnon is a graduate of SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital. He has previously served as president of the Monroe County Dental Society, the Seventh District Dental Society, and the New York State Dental Association in addition to participation in numerous committees and task forces in dental professional organizations at virtually every level.
“As a member of the Eastman Dental Center Foundation Board, Bill brings the full support of his fellow board members. As the current President of the American Dental Association, he’s also nationally connected and versed in the issues facing dentistry,” said Mark Taubman, M.D., Dean, School of Medicine and Dentistry. “Plus, he’s earned the respect of our clinical and research faculty. He’s the logical choice to lead us through the conclusion of the search.”
The search for permanent leadership continues on schedule, with Korn-Ferry consultants reviewing potential candidates and holding initial interviews. Full interviews are expected in August, and finalists should be identified by the end of September.
“Our search consultants are moving the process at a steady pace and we are excited about the level of interest they are receiving,” Taubman said.
Meyerowitz relinquishes his leadership role but will return to the faculty to administer his new NIH grant which makes Eastman one of six regional centers in the nation to expand evidence-based dental practice. EIOH will run the northeast region of the newly formed National Dental Practiced-Based Research Network. Meyerowitz has been chair of Dentistry since 1991 and provided leadership during the merger of Eastman Dental Center with the University, becoming the Director of Eastman in 1998. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, which unified all elements of academic dentistry within the Medical Center, and was named its first Director in 2009.
“I am immensely grateful for Cyril’s superb leadership and flexibility. He remained in the role longer than we originally expected in order to ensure a smooth transition,” Taubman said.
URMC CEO Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D. echoes this sentiment. “Thanks to Cyril, the EIOH has made a very positive difference in Rochester, and is well positioned as one of the premier dental academic institutions in the country,” he said.
