Two well-known oral health entities, Eastman Dental Center and the dental departments of the University of Rochester Medical Center, merged in 1997 and formed one organization with a mission to improve oral health through caring, discovery, teaching, and learning.
The merger created three separate but linked entities that offer the unique opportunities for the academic and oral health care effort within a major, academic, health care and research center.
The Eastman Department of Dentistry (EDD) houses both educational and translational research activities. Postdoctoral training occurs in a number of sites including Eastman Dental Center, Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital, and the outreach programs of the divisions of Community Dentistry and Oral Disease Prevention. The translational research laboratories are located primarily at the Eastman Dental Center site.
The Division of Eastman Dental Center (EDC) is the oral health arm of the Academic Health Center coordinating the academic dental effort and providing oral health services for the University of Rochester Medical Center/Strong Health.
The Center for Oral Biology (COB) was established within the Rochester Institute of Biomedical Science and focuses on basic science research in oral biology
