I think it unconscionable to publish this story without mentioning the time and frequency of exposure of teeth to fruit juices over what period of time caused the observed changes in enamel.

OKI,this is very exciting news as I am presently disabled and wanting to re-enter the work force. I am a singer and play several musical instruments but the thought of returning to the stage and singing and smiling with 4 teeth missing in obvious spots makes me full of stage fright. I just don’t have the money to pay for full cost dental implants but if there are reduced cost or experimental ones that would be a miracle. Can you tell me more? Thankyou for everything you can let me know!

Has any research been done on whether the adverse effects of OJ and other fruit juices can be counteracted by simply rinsing with water immediately after consumption, to dilute or remove the residual juice in the mouth? I am guessing that most of the damage is done not at the moment of consumption but during the following minutes to hours as a result of acidic juice residues in the mouth. I drink plenty of OJ but also rinse out afterwards.

How do I contact you to see if I qualify for dental implants I had my teeth extracted a few years ago and I just cannot wear dentures they gag me and are very painful. I tried to call the number listed but it was not in service

Congratulations on being given the RBJ Achievement Award. Your skills, sense of professionalism, and caring about the underserved are enough to earn you the award. Add to that, your ability to work with the various groups involved with Eastman Dental Center (EDC), your wonderful sense of humor, and your willingness to take on an increasing work load, only add to the reason that you are respected by your colleagues at EDC and by those in local and national government agencies and programs that strive to support the poor and underserved.

You exemplify George Eastman’s ideals when he foresaw a vision of healthy smiles for every child in Rochester and its vicinity, regardless of economic circumstances.

Since then, the Dispensary became known as the Eastman Dental Center (EDC) and merged with the University of Rochester Medical Center. EDC has flourished under the capable hands of leaders such as Drs. Harvey Burkhart and Basil G. Bibby and later by professionals including Drs. Dennis H. Leverett and Ronald J. Billings.

I am a dental hygienist. What about extending hygiene services like in other states? Also, an “at school “location for check and treatment points. This has been done in the past and I would love to be a part of that type of program. Of couse, I understand that there are legal issues that have to be reviewed, and changed. I think it is worth changing. I see this as an issue on the rise ,due to unemployment rates increasing and the nations finacial crisis worsening. Some health concerns are related to our oral health and the lower income sector can not afford dental care.They can not afford to take time off of work to seek needed treatment, let alone prevenative treatment. Some can not transport themselves, or their families to have treatment. There are families that do not qualify for mecaid, becase they are just above the poverty line, and these families can not afford any care. I would love to be part of the solution, for I think it is apparent that we have a problem.

This is not surprizing to us in the field of nutrition. Caries experience is more of a function of oral hygiene than the amount of caries one consumes. With increasing awareness or oral cleanliness this findings could be expected in developed nations where intake is more towards high fat and calorie diets.

Sir,
I am interested in your work. If you know Dr. Gerald Graser at EDC he can give you a short history of my background. I now live in Costa Rica. Among other projects I have one ongoing in the Talamanca region helping the indigenous Bribri and Cabecar Indians. We are planning to do a study about the risk factors for caries among these people using an analysis of their saliva. Their caries rate is 12 using the WHO standards. Any recommendations? Read your studies?

That is bizarre. I would argue that lifestyle determines if you are fat or not in addition to what you eat. Perhaps there are certain controls that are not being accounted for though.
